304 words. Who knows, it might lead somewhere eventually.

-

There was a fox on his bed.

It had nine tails.

Neji carefully sat up. Despite the evidence making itself comfortable on his blanket, he was almost certainly sure he wasn't dreaming.

"Good morning," he ventured. The fox yawned, revealing small, needle-sharp teeth, and eyed him sleepily. It had blue eyes. They glowed. Its fur was a soft-looking gold—not yellow, gold—and its tails were curled comfortably around its paws. It wasn't that big, either, maybe the size of a small dog.

Neji wondered what it was doing on his bed.

He got out, careful not to disturb the fox. Grabbing a towel and a change of clothes, he proceeded on to the bathroom, and gently closed the door behind him.

He looked at the mirror. A bewildered, pale face stared back at him, the pale, near-white eyes wide, the stern mouth pressed into an upside-down u.

He splashed water onto his face, ran it through his hair, and sighed. It bothered him to admit that he'd actually had more bizarre mornings than this.

Like that one time he'd woken up in Lee's room with a pounding headache, his clothes inexplicably missing, with absolutely no recollection of last night's events.

Compared to that, a nine-tailed fox was normal. Neji shuddered.

When he came out of the shower, his damp hair sticking to the back of his shirt, he found that the fox was still there. It was sleeping now, though, its nose tucked into its fur.

He was startled to find himself stroking it, and immediately tensed, but the fox didn't bite. It just slept, not seeming to notice what he was doing. Warily, he petted it a bit more, before snatching his hand away in half-panic.

Hm.

He picked up his backpack and, with one last look at the fox, went downstairs to breakfast.
